Homework for week 7

Te Papa's Colossal Squid

In Feburary 2007,a New Zealand fishing boat called the San Aspring went fishing for the Antarctic Tooth Fish.  But they caught something very different from an Antarctic Tooth Fish........ IT WAS A COLOSSAL SQUID! It was still hanging on to a Tooth fish and it was just alive! The crew relised this was an opportunity to learn about the ways of a colossal squid. It took the crew  TWO HOURS to get the squid on board in the boats freezer. When the boat returned to port, they put the squid in to a cool store in Timaru. It takes several hours for a 1.5 kilo chicken to defrost for your dinner. So how long would it take for a 495 -killo frozen colossal squid to defrost??  Any ideas?   FACTS:   The squids eye has a lense that is as big as an orange. The scientists put the squid's tentacles on bubble rap and floating plastic bags to prevent the tentacles from snapping off. WHAT THE SCIENTESTS DISCOVERED: -The squid mesured 4.2 metres in length and it weighed 495 kilos!  - It was a female because it had thousands of eggs in it's ovaries-It was possibly 3-5 years old.-Its last meal was an Antarctic Tooth Fish. Traces of Tooth Fishes eye lenses where in its stomach. At 4 am Monday ,1st of December , the lid is bolted onto the tank and the tank is hosisted onto a truck. The Colossal Squid is on the move!
